Whey Protein and Vegetarians

by FitnessGuru on April 7, 2010

I sometimes here the question about Whey Protein and how does it “comply” with a vegan diet. For a strict vegan diet, whey protein is pretty much off limits just like casein is unless you “allow” dairy products to a certain degree to be part of your vegetarian diet. For diets like lacto-ovo or the so-called lacto diet, whey is generally OK and therefore Whey Protein could be a great supplement for you to increase muscle mass. I still recommend to carefully read all the nutritional label information of a Whey Protein as some whey proteins may contain rennet, which in turn makes it definitely not vegan.

If you have never considered Whey Protein for your diet, you might not even exactly know what Whey Protein is. Whey protein is a dairy by-product originally produced during the cheese-making process. This protein is available in 3 types: isolates, concentrates and hydrolysates.

If you live on a vegetarian diet you probably know that it is much more difficult to get significantly levels of protein which in return makes it much more difficult to gain more muscle when working out. For the longest time it has been said that you cannot be a successful bodybuilder and vegetarian. Now you might not want to be a Body Builder, but having a strong body that is nicely toned is still a goal that should be achievable. So, if your vegan diet allows for dairy products, then definitely look at a good Whey Protein. If you prefer to avoid any dairy related products, there are proteins developed specifically for the vegan lifestyle.

Is Whey Protein Dangerous?
The reported benefits of whey protein are numerous, though the verdict is still out on some of them. In general Whey Protein is safe to take, however you should follow the recommended amounts for daily usage. If you are lacto-intolerant I would definitely stay away from Whey Protein.
