The Importance of Good Tennis Shoes

by FitnessGuru on April 6, 2010

Tennis – one of my favorite sports. I started playing tennis when I was 10 years old. During summer break from school a few friends of mine and I spent each day on the tennis court. We played 5-6 hours in a row. It was fun. During those long matches and fun tournaments we played I realized (even back then) how important it is to have a good tennis shoe. When playing for hours in a row your feet would hurt a lot as well as joints and legs in general. Fortunately my parents already knew and provided me with good tennis shoes.

Now 30 years later (I am in my low 40’s as I write this article) it is even more important to spend money on the right tennis shoe. For one I do not want to get hurt playing tennis and then of course that age thing is just not slowing down. Joints and muscles need to be warmed up properly as well as I do a lot of stretching. And then the tennis shoes – good Tennis Shoes are needed to provide lateral support, cushioning, shock absorption, flexibility and comfort. Think about a fast-paced tennis game – you are running from one side of the tennis court to the other. Then you have to spring towards the net, too. These kind of activities put you at danger of turning or twisting an ankle. That’s where the lateral support is urgently needed.

Unless you are playing on sand or grass, playing a hard surface court requires good cushioning in your tennis shoes. The tennis shoe also needs to provide good shock absorption. Playing tennis for an hour or two puts quite some pressure on your feet and you will definitely feel the results of wearing a cheap tennis shoe.

My recommendation is to spend money on the right tennis shoe. This investment is well worth it as not only gives you a health benefit, but playing tennis is just more fun when you do not have to concentrate on your feet, but just on the ball and the friend (or opponent) you are playing against.

Conclusion: If you enjoy playing tennis no matter the surface of the court then you should definitely look for a good tennis shoes. Those cheap tennis shoes from Walmart will just not cut it. And you do not want to sit home 10 years from now complaining about joint pain, knee pain, and whatever other pain that could have been prevented by buying a good tennis shoe right from the beginning. 10 years from now you should be out on the tennis court playing tennis and having a good time.
