Avoid the Freshman 15

by FitnessGuru on April 13, 2010

What are the Freshman 15 and why should you avoid them? Well, for starters Freshman 15 is a term for the average amount of weight a freshman puts on during the first year in college. 15 lbs – yep, that’s a lot of weight and if you ever had to lose weight you know how hard it is to lose 15 lbs. Often, once the weight is on it will stay on. With all the exams, papers and the busy social life that college has to offer, many college students just don’t find their way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Unless enrolled in a sports program most college freshmen drop any physical exercise they were eventually doing before. Beer and Pizza will take care of the 15 lbs to gain easily then.

While the typical recommendations to watch what one eats and drinks, these tips are also typically to be ignored. In general it is important to pick up some sort of physical exercise. College offers so many options to join a team, it should be one of the first steps after moving into your dorm room. The earlier you join a sports team, the better. Your whole college experience will include the recurring training and game events so that you do not even know differently. It is also a great way to make friends for life.

Another important thing to do is to leave your car (if you have one) parked and start riding the bike. It is great for the environment and it is great for your health. The earlier you can make it a habit, the better for your health and the goal to keep the freshman 15 off permanently. New friends that you make will know you and that you ride a bike if you do this from early on. Walk, use your feet and be active. That’s one of the keys to live healthy without missing out on the party fun. You’re young and your metabolism is still great. You do not have to exercise on a professional level to keep the pounds off, but even some regular exercise can make up for some occasional pizza and beer.

Have fun when in college, but keep an eye on your waiste line. Beer and Pizza are Ok (in moderation) if you find ways to exercise.
